Hey Oppo-ites, I know there are a few new yorkers here. We are taking our kids (9 and 5yo) and doing a one day crash tour of NYC. Any tips on good things to see? We are not going to a show, not worth the effort with these kids. One is very interested in the Statue of Liberty so that's on our list to visit. (who knew you needed reservations months in advance to go inside?!) Any good stuff? I haven't been in the city in probably 25 years.

Chelsea market. It's got great food and shopping and the old railways above it have been converted to pedestrian walkways with art installments and foliage. It's a nice place to have lunch or people watch.

I love doing the full English "high tea" at the St. Regis Hotel, but that's probably less convenient for somebody in town with children.

Check out Discovery Times Square . They always have really cool exhibits going on!

There's a lot of interesting culture in Chinatown too. Dim Sum at the Golden Unicorn is always a treat.

USS Intrepid

I loved it as a kid, one of the only tourist-y things I ever did in NYC. I grew up not too far away in NJ

Little kids, you say? Take them to visit Dylan's Candy Bar. Ralph Lauren's daughter Dylan built herself a mini Willy Wonka factory, and your kids will love it. You may not like it if you're big on fitness or dental health, though.

A lot has changed in 25 years! Significantly less crack! Ha ha.

Times Square and the surrounding area in general is pretty good. M&M store, FAO, Central Park, the zoo, etc. Madame Tussaud's is pretty cool but might be pricey and/or scary for your 5 year old. Going to a gourmet cupcake place would probably be neat too if you are OK giving them a sugar boost. There's a bunch, I like the one by Bryant park.

and hilarity at the sub across the pier when my dad struggled through the submarine doors (he's 6'3)

Yeah you aren't the first to suggest that. How long does it take to go through?

It can eat a whole afternoon if you want. I really is a whole air/space museum inside. Just like any museum it depends on how quick you go through and which exhibits speak to you the most. For me as a kid the coolest was climbing up and looking in the fighter jets on the main deck.

If you're anything like MY dad, who literally gets thrown out of museums at closing time because he MUST read every, single, placcard, and see every, single thing then it could be a long trip. (seriously, The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn had security following him trying to get him out after the 4th announcement that they were closed).

Dont make eye contact with anyone trying to sell you anything or get you to take a buss tour or see a comedy show.

And tell anyone wearing Brooklyn Nets apparel that I said "first round exit."

Yeah our kids want to keep on the move. I'd enjoy it much more by myself I'm sure. Not sure how long my kids would last. But we'll look into it, thanks!

As long as you want, really. I went there for my first and only time a few years back and it was very neat. Not sure if the sub is still there, but that was really cool too.

FAO is a must for the kids.

Apparantly FAO is now a Toys R US? And yes the sub is still there. Was just checking out the Intrepid on google maps, you can zoom down to the flight deck. Seems like it could be a whole day visit in itself.

Perhaps they moved fron their old building, there is indeed a bitching TRU in NYC, but there's still an FAO. I always hit those two and the Lego store when I go to the city.

The weather is warming up, i gotta imagine kids would love a ride on the 2nd level of an open roof bus through the city. Make sure you eat at an AUTHENTIC restaurant. I dont understand folks who go to NYC to eat at a national chain they can eat at home.

Learn from the locals how to cross the street. The cross walk lights are merely a suggestion.

As a California boy, it took me a few days to get used to it ("Those people are going to get hit by a taxi!").

Have fun!

Definitely the statue of liberty. I went there a few years back and it was great. Even if you can't make it to the top, just walking around and crossing on the ferry were worth it.

Also I second the USS Intrepid. I think they have a space shuttle now too. It's pricey though, last time I looked into going tickets were around $40. Maybe you can get a del online before going, and hopefully it's less expensive for the kids.
